Bush Pilots Course 20
JULY 2007
Welcome to Johannesburg and to Sky
Africa’s Bush Pilot Training course. We are glad you could join us in our beautiful country. Whilst the purpose of this course is to learn the theory and practical aspects of flying out in the wild country, it is also about having fun. Some of the flying will be simple and some very challenging, but all of it will be scenic, exciting and fun.
The course comprises two main elements, Bush Flying & Bush Craft (living and surviving in the bush). The course combines the two elements to enable the student to safely fly and explore the African landscape, with confidence and skill.
This document provides a day-to-day itinerary of the training program. Most days will include a bush-craft lecture, a flight briefing, tasks and goals for the day and flying training. You will always be accompanied by your dedicated instructor who will guide you through each aspect of the course. As each student has a dedicated instructor and aircraft, your course will proceed at your pace, not that of the group. This enables students with different skill and qualification levels, to proceed comfortably through the course.
We trust you will thoroughly enjoy your time with us. And whilst you are out in the bush flying, don’t forget to appreciate our beautiful country, the wide-open free airspace and
the majestic wildlife.

Happy Landings,

The Sky Africa Team.

You might want to do a casual flight with us and will be handed general information on the SKYAFRICA Bush Pilots course and its objectives

DAY 2
Brakpan Airfield
Overview:
A briefing will be given on t
he Rules and Regulations relating to the Brakpan airspace and the Johannesburg CTR [approach plates]. Students will be introduced to their dedicated instructor and the aircraft they will be training in. An assessment flight will be conducted introducing the student to the area, and allowing time to become familiar with the aircraft. This flight also enables the instructor to assess the level of competency of the student.

*Note: This flight may be scheduled earlier to allow for a buffer in case of poor weather

DAY 3
Brakpan Airfield

Overview:
Now that you familiar with the simple Brakpan airspace and procedures it is time to practice more advanced procedures relevant to bush flying. The departure from Brakpan will focus on short-field technique and obstacle clearance.
In the general flying area we will practice slow flight, with attention to the characteristics and warning signs of an aircraft near the stall. The next objective is low-level slow flight. This is important for both game viewing and airfield inspections. Aborted approaches from slow flight and high-rate of descent will also be covered. We will then return to Brakpan to practice the short/soft field landing techniques. Certain aspects of the validation test requirement will also be covered.
Classroom Flight Briefing:

Theory and technique of Short-field take-off and landing
Low level slow flight, bad weather t
rap
Aborted approach, and the escape route

Instructor Briefing:

An additional sortie will also be flown as a check flight for the validation of your foreign licence.
You will also write all exams and complete all administrative work necessary to obtain your
license validation
*Note: This flight may be scheduled earlier to allow for a buffer in case of poor weather.

DAY 4
Brakpan Airfield, departing For kunkuru
Overview:
Today we will be departing northwards to our destination: Kunkuru.
The flight has several goals. The flight will enable each student to practise radio procedures, navigation and circuit procedures. We will practise circuit joining procedures and Touch ‘n Go’s at several airfields. Routing into the Wonderboom CTR will take us through controlled airspace enroute to the Waterberg. From here northwards the visual references for VFR navigation become more sparse. This will be the navigation test. Kunkuru bush strip is a one-way dirt strip directly into the hills. Will you find it?
Classroom Flight Briefing:

DAY 5
Kunkuru

Overview
Today’s flying is all about the bush. Dirt strips, grass, runway inspections, wild animals, low-level flying and excitement. Being on a game park, you will have noticed that we share the runway with the local wildlife.

Dolve Vita in Italien

]

This is just one of the important lessons in today’s flying. We will focus on ground handling techniques to prevent damage to the aircraft, short/rough field take-off and landings and field inspection techniques.
Our routing keeps us near the Waterberg range enjoying the scenic beauty of the area.
Many of the airfields we will visit are part of a private game reserve and thus well stocked with wildlife. The airfields we will be visiting will all require a precautionary inspection to check the runway surface, the obstacles in the area and to ensure the runway is free of animals.
